Analytical Bio-Chemistry (ABC) Laboratories announced recently that it intends to expand operations at its original 56-acre campus just east of Columbia. A $4M, 10,000-square-foot laboratory addition is part of a larger program that involves a number of facility- and property-related improvements aimed at bringing greater efficiency to ABC's growing business.

"The improvements at our original campus will enhance work flow efficiencies and better align our facilities with modern laboratory practices," said Scott Ward, Sr. Vice President & General Manager of ABC's Chemical Services Division. "These efficiencies will provide growth capacity and strengthen our competitive position as a leading provider of analytical services to the agrochemical and chemical markets," he said. Improvements also include various renovations and the demolition of older, deteriorating structures on the original campus.

ABC has selected ARCO Construction Company, a St. Louis-based design-build contractor to coordinate construction of the laboratory addition. In 2007-2008, ARCO built ABC's new 90,000-square-foot pharmaceutical development facility at MU's Discovery Ridge Research Park. ABC Laboratories' President and CEO, Byron E. Hill, said that was a decision based upon competitive pricing, a commitment to meeting ABC's timeline for completion, and ARCO's previous success at including local businesses in the process. Over 80% of the total construction budget for the Discovery Ridge project was awarded to Columbia and other mid-Missouri subcontractors. Hill said financing for the construction currently is being negotiated with a local bank.
