Article: Chromatography - An Industry Overview

Chromatography is one of the most powerful purification methods available to biomanufacturers, and its use is also seen across a wide array of industries. Providing a fundamental tool to detect, separate, and purify substances, chromatography processes have been implemented into a number of manufacturing schemes. Advanced chromatography technologies are helping to solve some of the manufacturing capacity challenges that face biopharmaceutical manufacturers. Process developers should be aware of the science's ever-expanding capabilities for drug purification to meet a rising demand for biotherapeutics free of contaminating proteins, viruses, nucleic acids, enzymes, and enzyme inhibitors.

Customizing Chromatography
A huge diversity of recombinant-technology — derived therapies is being developed from different sources: from animal and microbial cells to transgenic milk and plant sources such as corn and tobacco. Customized chromatography processes are required to achieve the highest efficiency possible with any product source. In some cases, a drug purification process can incorporate as many as six separate chromatographic steps. Fortunately, new innovations and advanced engineering can help manufacturers tailor the right solution for each specific application.
