Colder Products Company Introduces Disposable Dip-Tube System For Diesel Exhaust Fluid Delivery
March 24, 2009
The DrumQuik® PRO chemical dispensing system from Colder Products Company provides safe, easy and economic delivery of urea-based Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) from drums, jerry cans and other bulk transfer containers while minimizing the risk of contamination. The easy-to-use, closed-system design combines into one integrated unit a recyclable bung closure and dip-tube with a reusable quick disconnect coupler, ensuring that both sides are sealed from point-of-origin to point-of-use.
"The best way to minimize exposure when transporting and dispensing urea-based DEF from bulk containers is with a closed system that eliminates the removal of the inserted dip-tube from the container," said Thomas Braun, business unit manager, chemical and packaging products, Colder Products Company. "With DrumQuik PRO, the dip-tube travels with the container allowing users to easily dispense the DEF by removing a shipping plug and then locking the coupler in place. This eliminates the need to install, remove or clean a dip-tube, minimizing the potential for fluid or vapor contact or contamination of the DEF itself. The low cost also facilitates single-trip packaging eliminating the need to return expensive dip-tubes to the filling location."
The Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that manufacturers of diesel-engine powered vehicles reduce NOx emission levels by 2010. Many manufacturers have turned to Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) as a method for achieving the mandated targets and urea-based DEF is the key ingredient of this process. In preparation for the deadline gas stations, truck stops and "home base" operators will install delivery stations for dispensing DEF. Intermediate Bulk Containers and drums are two popular bulk transfer containers used for the delivery of DEF because they are easy to transport and connect to pumping systems.
For safe and efficient delivery of DEF from bulk transfer containers, the DrumQuik PRO system is comprised of two components: a polypropylene coupler and a polyethylene drum insert assembly. The drum insert assembly contains a bung closure and dip-tube and can be shipped as part of the container package safely sealing it from the point of fill to point of use. No special tools are required to connect the coupler to the system. Clean-up and disposal are easier, because the low-cost drum insert and dip-tube can provide single-trip or multi-use capability. It can be disposed of, recycled along with the container or reused with a new container. DrumQuik PRO products are also available with color coding or keying options as additional safety features.
The coupler features a built-in vent port, which allows connection of a check valve to prevent release of harmful vapors to the atmosphere or an inert blanket gas (N2 or CO2) to protect valuable chemicals from exposure to air, thus preventing contamination of the DEF.
