Health Canada Approves Revolutionary OTC Dosing System

January 7, 2009

Health Canada has approved two of AccuDial Pharmaceutical, Inc.'s over-the-counter (OTC) pediatric medications. AccuDial's medications feature the first weight-based dosing system that allows caregivers to accurately administer over-the-counter medications to children. The patented system uses a rotating dosing label on the bottle so a caregiver administering the medication can be assured the amount they are giving to the child is accurate. AccuDial is the only pharmaceutical brand to provide parents and caregivers with this easy-to-use system for dosing by weight. AccuDial's rotating label provides dosing directions in two-pound increments for children up to 100 pounds.

According to a survey conducted by the American Medical Association, children between the ages of 2 and 12 are inaccurately dosed up to 73% of the time because the amount of medication they are given is based on age, rather than weight. This means they are not receiving the correct therapeutic benefit. Most health care experts recommend weight- based dosing to ensure a child will receive the maximum benefits from allergy, analgesic, cough, and cold medications.

The company's patented dosing solution enables a caregiver to rotate the bottle's label and quickly find the correct dose based on a child's specific weight. Every AccuDial product includes a dosing spoon that is calibrated in mL and ½ mL for complete efficiency in matching the dosing directions. All dosing directions are given in both pounds and kilograms.

The two products approved by Health Canada with AccuDial's weight-based dosing system are:

  • AccuDial Pain & Fever (Acetaminophen)
  • AccuDial Allergy (Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride)

AccuDial is in the process of filing seven additional pediatric medications with the company's weight-based dosing system with Health Canada.

"With accurate dosing directions available at a parent's fingertips, AccuDial makes it easy to give a sick child the right amount of medication safely and effectively every time," said Bob Terwilliger, president and CEO for AccuDial. "Because the dose is based on their weight, the cold, cough, sinus, allergy, or pain and fever products will do a better job of easing the symptoms when given in the correct dosage," said Terwilliger.

AccuDial plans to launch a family of nine over-the-counter, pediatric analgesic, allergy, cold, and cough medications by third quarter 2009. The company is also working on obtaining Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals in the United States, as well as with international regulatory agencies for European distribution.

About AccuDial®

AccuDial® is a patented, weight-based dosing system designed to administer over-the-counter medications safely and effectively as intended. The outer label of AccuDial's patented, two-part labeling system rotates around the bottle. A parent or caregiver simply turns the outer label until the child's weight in pounds (lbs) or kilograms (kg) is displayed in a window, and the proper weight-based dose in milliliters (mL) is displayed below the child's weight. Then the medicine is administered with the included AccuDial dosing spoon calibrated in mL and ½ mL for complete efficiency. AccuDial means no under-dosing, which causes an inadequate response, and no overdosing that may be harmful. AccuDial is the ONLY rotating label for weight-specific dosing.
