Tampa, FL - ISPE, a global association of more than 23,000 pharmaceutical manufacturing professionals, has launched the Journal of Pharmaceutical Innovation, a new, scientific, peer-reviewed journal for the publication of research and review articles.

Two years ago, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asked ISPE to play a prominent role in their plan to be a catalyst for change "to enable fully flexible manufacturing concepts, within regulation, using the best engineering and scientific principles available, improving business and taking risk into consideration." In response to this challenge and with the Board of Directors' support, ISPE has embarked on several initiatives in consultation with the FDA, including launching this scientific peer reviewed journal.

"Due to Industry changes and government mandates, ISPE decided to partner with Reed Elsevier, a leading international publisher, to create a new scientific journal that will align with the future of the industry," said Bob Best, CEO and President of ISPE.

The journal will include scientific data from a panel of distinguished authors and will be mailed to Members along with the Society's longtime established technical magazine, Pharmaceutical Engineering. Reed Elsevier publishes many titles including Cell and The Lancet.

The Journal of Pharmaceutical Innovation is intended for the publication of research and review manuscripts emphasizing new and innovative methods and techniques used by pharmaceutical professionals serving all aspects of the industry including manufacturing, and applied pharmaceutical science and technology in process and product understanding and control.

In addition to key FDA leaders and global industry stakeholders, ISPE is pleased to have the support of Dr. James K. Drennen III, Associate Professor, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, who will serve as the editor of the journal.

The Journal of Pharmaceutical Innovation will reach 23,000 ISPE Members in 81 countries. In addition to ISPE Members, the Journal of Pharmaceutical Innovation will have a distribution of 15,000 international industry and academic professionals. The journal will be available at no charge in print and on-line versions to ISPE Members, along with on-line access to select Reed Elsevier journals.

This global distribution of more than 37,000 will target facility engineers, project managers, plant managers in manufacturing and production, product development
managers, R&D managers/directors, quality/compliance managers/directors, process development/scale-up personnel, process engineers, control/automation engineers, validation managers, regulatory affairs directors, technology transfer managers/directors, production engineers, formulation managers, pharmaceutics professionals, analytical control personnel, chemists, formulation scientists, process scientists, and regulatory, government, and academic professionals.

Topics for the first issue of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Innovation include:

  • Process parameters
  • The need for a broader perspective if PAT implementation is to be successful on the pharmaceutical sector
  • Raman spectroscopy for the determination of coating uniformity on pharmaceutical tablets
  • Suspensions of fluor-containing nanoparticles for quantifying emitting radionuclides in non-hazardous media
  • Design space for a solventless photocurable pharmaceutical coating
  • NIR spectrometry for the characterization of fuel components in a novel tamper-resistant pill bottle
  • A method development strategy for quantitative chemical imaging
  • Critical material properties for Solid Dosage Form Design
  • The use of informatics to support drug product development
