Article: ISPE To Continue To Lead Innovation In The Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Industry
The International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) was created more than 25 years ago when six pharmaceutical engineers gathered at the American Airlines Admiral Club at La Guardia airport with the goal to create a group that could address the needs of pharmaceutical manufacturers and engineers. Today, ISPE is a global society with a membership of more than 23,000 industry professionals from 81 countries.
The Pharmaceutical
Industry Is On The Brink Of Change
Last spring, ISPE interviewed leaders from some of
the top pharmaceutical companies and regulatory
leaders and discovered that the pharmaceutical
industry is entering a period of significant change.
Challenges to this transition include:
- the questioning of traditional business concepts
- the increasing costs of drugs and consumer/political pricing pressures
- the increasing difficulty of developing blockbuster drugs
- the industry's growing dependence on blockbuster drugs
- the growing trend of generics capturing a major share of the global market
- the diminishing of patent exclusivity
- the declining productivity of research and development
- the increasing transparency by regulators and the public
- the growing prevalence of outsourcing
- the expanding influence of companies from the Asian Pacific regarding discovery, manufacturing, development, and distribution
- the constrained ability to attract qualified technical and scientific staff in many parts of the world.
