"Current life expectancy in Ukraine is very low, due to cardiovascular, oncological and autoimmune diseases. MaxWell is committed to bringing much-needed drugs and new principles of medical care to help advance the healthcare system of Ukraine as well as other countries of the CIS," said Dr. Kenneth Alibek, founder, president and CEO of MaxWell Biocorporation. "This symposium, which will bring Ukrainian and American medical professionals together, is the first step to begin the process of creating a more effective health system in these countries." The "Research Track" will host panels on current developments in the diagnosis and therapy of oncological, cardiovascular, and immunological diseases in Ukraine, the United States and select other countries. It will feature speakers from medical, business and professional organizations.

The "Business Track" will host panels and speakers exploring the complex nature of medical and pharmaceutical business in Ukraine, including perspectives from Ukrainian medical opinion leaders, procurement of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and pharmaceutical equipment, production of off-patent generic biopharmaceuticals and chemopharmaceuticals in a challenging regulatory environment, and the legal aspects of medical and pharmaceutical business in the CIS.

"MaxWell is committed to helping integrate Ukraine into the larger international community. This private sector-sponsored symposium demonstrates that there are lucrative opportunities in Ukraine and other republics of the Commonwealth of Independent States," said Dr. Peter Leitner, president of MaxWell USA, LLC.

Why Ukraine?
People in Ukraine and its post-Soviet neighbors face many of the same health challenges as people in developing countries, plus challenges unique to the post-Soviet region. For example, morbidity and mortality rates for cancers and heart disease are far higher, and survival rates far lower, for sufferers in Ukraine and its neighbors than in the West. Average lifespan, especially for Ukrainian men, lags far behind Western statistics. Negative demographics are shrinking the Ukrainian population at an alarming rate, and this trend is predicted to continue.

Many factors are responsible for this situation: decades of Soviet and post-Soviet underinvestment in public health; widespread Soviet-era environmental pollution; the prolonged and difficult transition from a Soviet to a Western-style economy; continuing heavy consumption of alcohol, tobacco and high-fat foods; and the legacy of Chernobyl-caused cancers, many of which are now surfacing after more than 20 years of gestation.

At the same time, today's Ukrainian medical and pharmaceutical market is growing extremely quickly – second only to Russia in the CIS. This rare combination of significant unmet medical needs and quickly growing demand offers excellent opportunities for companies wishing to enter Ukraine's fast-emerging pharmaceutical and medical markets. MaxWell USA and our sister company in Ukraine, the Scientific Production Oncological and Cardiological Center "Max-Well," are well-placed to help facilitate market entry for interested foreign companies.
