Article: The Evolution Of LIMS In The Pharmaceutical Industry
As seen in the Fall 2007 Pharmaceutical Online Solutions Update
A recent study by the ARC Advisory Group reveals that the global laboratory information management systems (LIMS) market is expected to grow from $307.4 million in 2005 to over $398.7 million in 2010. This growth will be the result of increasingly rigid regulatory requirements and the replacement of paper-based and homegrown LIMS with commercial solutions. Even the smallest laboratories automate their laboratory information systems to capture structured data. The broadening in the scope of LIMS projects will also lead to increased revenues for suppliers.
LIMS were initially developed to address information gathering and processing needs in environmental laboratories. As the similarities between laboratories in different industries became more obvious, LIMS vendors focused on developing highly adaptable, generic systems that could suit different industry requirements. These solutions were provided with customization tools designed to extend the systems' capabilities to meet targeted needs.
Benefits Achieved With LIMS
Since the advent of LIMS, the strategic and business
importance of pharmaceutical laboratories has evolved
tremendously. Laboratory staff have shifted their expertise
from manual and time-consuming activities such as
maintaining paper records, instrument attenuation, and
cutting/weighing chromatograms to more sophisticated
data analysis that drives critical decisions. In addition,
LIMS have strengthened the ability of laboratories to
impact strategic corporate objectives such as decreasing
product time to market and ensuring regulatory
compliance. As LIMS and laboratories have evolved,
the importance of system integration and automation
has drastically increased, enabling laboratories to be at
the forefront of process harmonization, data centralization,
and minimizing human error.
