Application Note: Engineered Containment For Powder Handling Equipment
By Flow Sciences Inc.
The objective of this performance evaluation study was to identify if powder containment enclosures are effective at protecting workers from occupational exposure. Application specific enclosures were designed and built for a fluid bed dryer and a rapid mix granulator by Flow Sciences, Inc. The standard for exposure acceptance was determined to be 10 - 1 micrograms of particulate per cubic meter of air (µg/m³) over an eight hour time weighted average period. A surrogate powder detection test utilizing breathing zone filters was employed. Concentrations of detected powders were averaged and an operator breathing zone (OBZ) concentration was calculated. The enclosures passed the surrogate powder test and exceeded the performance standard.
