Pharmaceutical
Online The Magazine 2011

It's always interesting, as we enter into a new year, to take a look back. Although 2010 didn't have quite as strong a comeback as was hoped, many large and midsize pharmaceutical and biotech companies still reported record profits in 2010. And, although we didn't see the big-name mergers we saw in 2009, larger pharmaceutical companies continued to acquire small life science companies in order to expand their portfolios. Strides were made in drug approvals, too. After a long road, and rejections of several products, the FDA is close to the approval of a new anti-obesity drug. PhrMA announced that American biopharmaceutical companies are researching nearly 100 new Alzheimer's drugs. Healthcare reform legislation was passed that empowers the FDA to approve biosimilars, and new innovations are being made daily, bringing the industry closer to personalized medicines. Another overriding trend is drug safety. It seems we can't go a day without seeing another drug product recalled. With increased transparency and a tighter leash on manufacturing companies, tougher crackdowns will continue to bring greater safety to consumers. But this also means the need for better, more efficient equipment. What will we be looking back on at this time next year? It will be exciting to see.
