Article: Single-Use Saves Time For Contract Manufacturing Organization

There are many reasons why a single-use approach is considered or adopted by pharmaceutical manufacturers. In a recent survey in 2010,1 the most important reason for the increasing use of disposables was elimination of cleaning (90.9% of respondents) and third was reduced cross-contamination (83.3%). The second and fourth positions, however, were both linked to "time"–faster campaign turnaround (83.6%) and reduced time to get facility up and running (78.4%).
This importance of time is especially relevant to Contract Manufacturing Organizations (CMOs), where deadlines for their customers are often very short and the ability to respond quickly is of considerable commercial value. This applies to Patheon, a global contract development and manufacturing organization with a site based in Swindon, UK—a center of excellence for sterile dosage forms. Recently, Patheon completed a manufacturing campaign in which time was a dominant factor, and this article summarizes the project.
