Integrated Biosystems has developed a unique tool to enable process developers to study the beneficial effects of controlled freeze-thaw phenomena at small scale. Our scale-down system has been shown to accurately mimic the dynamic conditions in large vessels. CryoWedge scale-down modules precisely duplicate the active and passive heat transfer surfaces in larger vessels. It is useful for studying the freeze-thaw process and for performing stability studies at the milliliter scale.

The modules utilize proprietary active and passive heat transfer surfaces to solidify aqueous solutions through a controlled process that provides dendritic ice formation. This process is identical to the processes that occur in Integrated Biosystems' CryoCans and CryoVessels. Because proteins are quickly frozen between growing dendrites, they are protected from degradation mechanisms (aggregation, precipitation, and denaturation) commonly observed when freezing takes place either too quickly or too slowly.

Integrated Biosystems offers a full range of scalable Cryotrol systems for process development, pilot, and commercial scale production. When controlled by the CryoTrol freeze/thaw system, the CryoWedge precisely duplicates the phenomenological events in large CryoVessels.
