Transfer In
When materials are required during continuous processing within the isolator there are limited ways of maintaining the sterile environment. Passing materials in through lockchambers with rapid independent bio-decontamination is one way, but this is batch-based and may be a bottleneck to production.
Getinge's STERSTAR e-beam system, pictured above, and described in the Sterilization Equipment section is purpose designed for rapid, continuous surface bio-decontamination of syringe tubs, and is a good example of the way e-beam can be used for this application.
Transfer Out
Similarly, continuous production means that materials produced must be passed out of the isolator. While isolators provide a good degree of Sterility Assurance (compared with production in a clean room), Terminal Sterilization should be used whenever possible. The Getinge STERBOX system provides continuous e-beam sterilization of filled liquid product as it exits the isolated production line. Read more in the Sterilization Equipment section.
