2013 3rd Quarter Supply Chain ISAC Report Of Cargo Theft Activity

The Supply Chain Information Sharing and Analysis Center’s (SC-ISAC) primary mission is to facilitate communication among supply chain dependent industry stakeholders in order to help secure the global supply chain. Towards this end, the SC-ISAC has created a vetted group of trusted community including manufacturers, shippers, distributors, consignees, law enforcement and insurance entities, where critical information impacting the supply chain is shared.

This information, after being archived and analyzed, allows us to understand the actions of the cargo criminals and how they react to industry and law enforcement actions related to prevention and enforcement. The recovery of the empty equipment and the continued excellent work by law enforcement locating and identifying warehouses where the stolen product is being staged is providing invaluable information of how and where organized groups are operating.

The activity of identity theft and the fictitious pick-up method of operation continue to increase in areas around the country. These situations are proving to be much harder to track after the freight is picked up because in many instances the equipment information is not being obtained by shippers and the exception is many times not until the fraudulent carrier does not make the service due date. The equipment being used in the fictitious pick up scenarios is not being abandoned after the fact, leaving no evidence as to where the now stolen goods may have been dropped off.
