Fresenius Kabi Newsletter: FPP Insight: Emulsions — Established And Promising Drug Carriers For Parenteral Application

In this issue of our Insight we decided to focus on some of the core competences in manufacturing that FKPP can offer to you.

Firstly, we describe the possibilities of emulsion technology. Emulsions are an established way of delivering necessary nutrients to the body when a patient is not able to eat normally, and this technology has also proven its value in drug delivery. If you are dealing with hydrophobic components that are nearly insoluble in aqueous solutions, then using emulsion as a medium for your drug is clearly one route you should consider. With its very long history in the emulsions field, FKPP is the ideal partner to discuss your needs and provide tailor-made solutions.

Secondly, we highlight the manufacturing of macromolecules like hydroxylethyl starch (HES) or Sinistrine. To manufacture these molecules starting from natural sources, we use several specialtechniques that we can also apply to other molecules as appropriate. Another thing we can do is link your drug to our existing molecules, for example HES – HESylation is a similar strategy to PEGylation, but with a much safer molecule. In this way FKPP gives you access to new drug delivery vehicles.

Thirdly, we have put one of our medical device manufacturing locations in the spotlight of this issue – the Mihla site, Germany. In this plant, we can realize any project from development of new products to large-scale manufacturing of injection moldings. The manufacturing setup with modular production cells is a very cost-effective way to organize high-tech injection molding.
