Membrane Types

Pall offers four membrane types with superior performance and stability to meet the challenges of each unique TFF application. Membrane Types include: Omega™, Alpha™, Regen™, and Supor® TFF membranes. Each membrane is available in a broad range of cassette types and configurations.

Omega Membrane

Omega polyethersulfone (PES) membranes have been specifically modified to minimize protein binding to the surface and interstitial structure of the membrane. This polymeric membrane is stable against biological and physical degradation due to the unique chemical properties of PES.

Features and Benefits

  • Low affinity and adsorption characteristics resulting in higher product recovery
  • Available in a wide variety of cassette configurations, for easy and direct scale-up/scale down
  • Greatest selection of ultrafiltration membrane rating available:
    • 650 Da - 1000 kDa to fit specific application needs
  • Compatible with acids, bases and a variety of other cleaning agents to optimize for example cleaning procedures

Alpha Membrane

Alpha membrane is a PES membrane that is modified to minimize the flux depression caused by antifoam agents (such as silicone and polyglycols) that might especially affect membranes with smaller cut-offs. Alpha membranes typically clean up quicker and easier after contact with these agents.

Features and Benefits

  • Proprietary membrane chemistry reduces non-specific adsorption, minimizes membrane fouling and increases product recovery
  • Exceptional membrane recovery and stability after cleaning results in a longer life for the membrane

Regen Membrane

Regen membrane is regenerated cellulose. This low protein binding hydrophilic membrane has broad chemical compatibility. Regenerated cellulose membranes have lower water permeability than PES membranes, but regenerated cellulose may give higher, consistent process flux rates, especially if antifoam agents or polysaccharides are present in the process fluid.

Features and Benefits

  • Good for processing hydrophobic proteins where their low binding characteristic increases membrane performance
  • Maintains high process flux rates in presence of antifoams and polysaccharides which can lead to shorter process time
  • Broad solvent compatibility to handle also applications where PES membranes cannot be used An alternative may be substituted where regenerated cellulose is specified and validated to minimize the effort of revalidation.

Supor TFF Membrane

Supor TFF membrane is a micron-rated porous, modified polyethersulfone membrane with a uniform depth structure. The membrane is optimized for microfiltration TFF applications including harvest, concentration and clarification of cell cultures and fermentation broths. Use Supor TFF membranes to harvest bacterial, mammalian, and insect cells; separate red blood cells from hemoglobin; and clarify yeast broth and bacte¬rial lysates.

Features and Benefits

  • Low non-specific adsorption due to its hydrophilic chemistry which leads to higher product yields
  • Wide range of membrane pore sizes to optimize the process
  • Compatible with acids, bases, oxidizing agents and variety of other cleaning agents to fit different application needs
