Tangential flow filtration (TFF) is a rapid and efficient method for separation and purification of biomolecules. It can be applied to a wide range of biological fields, such as: immunology, protein chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology. TFF can be used to concentrate and desalt sample solutions ranging in volume from 10 mL to thousands of liters. It can be used to fractionate large from small biomolecules, harvest cell suspensions, and clarify fermentation broths and cell lysates.

Selecting the Right TFF technology

Pall offers two main technology platforms for upscale in tangential flow filtration. Each platform incorporates a range of flow channel configurations and membrane chemistries, providing customers with the widest choice of options to meet specific processing objectives. The main technologies available are identified in the table, ‘Flat Sheet Cassette Formats'.

The cassette options (right) can be used to perform small-scale test work to determine the membrane MWCO and area requirements for the larger formats (Centrasette™ and Maxisette™ membrane cassettes) or to perform scale-down studies for existing large scale installations. Please refer to the catalog, Pall Solutions for the BioPharmaceutical Industry, for details on the larger area cassette formats. The Pall Biotech Hollow fibers are available in a range of encapsulated modules, which can be steamed or autoclaved, making them ideal for primary separation applications, especially where sterile processing is required, or where a disposable/encapsulated format is preferred.

Pall offers additional technologies for tangential flow filtration applications including Membralox™ ceramic membranes, UF hollow fibers and Pallsep™ vibrating membrane filters.
