About Us
To accomplish its mission, INDUNIV maintains an annual grantmaking program, which includes competitive, designated collaboration and special grants. A Scientific Affairs Committee, on which both industry and academia are represented, defines areas of interest and issues Calls for Proposals. Proposals are reviewed by the Scientific Affairs Committee, which recommends the disbursement of grants by the executive Committee.
INDUNIV also maintains other programs designed to enhance the collaboration between industry and academia, including seminars, technical trips, internship programs, publications and other services. As a result of INDUNIV's initiative, the Materials Characterization Center has been established at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. The Center, funded by a $4 million grant from the Science and Technology Board, is technically at the level of only a handful of such facilities in the hemisphere. Its analytical services are offered at considerable savings in time and money to industry and it also serves as a teaching and research facility for universities on the island.
Any industrial firm in the fields of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, electronics, biotechnology, environment and food, as well as any private or public university in Puerto Rico can be a regular, dues-paying member of INDUNIV with voting privileges and with participation in the Scientific Affairs Committee. Government is represented through the Economic Development Administration.
Support for INDUNIV comes from several sources. Annual dues from member firms and institutions account for a major part of INDUNIV's income. Grants from entities such as the Puerto Rico Community Foundation, National Science Foundation, University of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Economic Development Administration makes up another important portion. Funding for the establishment of the Materials Characterization Center was provided by a grant from the Special Fund for Research and Development created under the Puerto Rico Tax Incentives Act of 1987.
