Fine Grinding Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients
Product Brochure: Quadro® F10 Compact, Fine Grinding System
Quadro Engineering Corp. An international company was looking to mill active ingredients. An active ingredient is any substance intended to furnish pharmacological activity or other direct effect in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, or to affect the structure and function of the body of humans or other animals. Being the most potent part of a tablet or capsule, particle size is critical to ensure proper absorption into the bloodstream. The average particle size for APIs typically range from 20 - 60 micron. APIs tend to be hard to mill into the micron size. In this case, the manufacturer set a target of d99 = 60 micron for three different APIs being produced.
Starting from an infeed of d90 = 300 micron (50 mesh), the Fine Grind F10 milled the first API to a d90 of 19.9 micron and a d99 of 45 micron at 44 kg/hr. The second API was slightly harder and milled to a d90 of 22.4 micron and a d99 of 39 micron at 23 kg/hr. The third API, an anti-parasitic, milled to a d90 of 35.6 micron and a d99 of 56 micron at 43.4 kg/hr.
The Quadro Fine Grind F10 is a complete stand-alone process plant that affords benefits to the processor including savings through reduced downtime, minimal space requirements, rapid product changeover and enhanced process efficiency. Other advantages include quick disassembly for maintenance, tooling change and cleaning, low power consumption as compared to traditional mills, and low noise. The Model F10 promotes uniform grinding capabilities producing higher yields on specification and has a wide tooling selection to meet all grinding requirements.
