Are you clear on the role of metadata?
Today there is an urgent need for the pharmaceutical industry to improve their data infrastructure to support metadata collection and curation so that data can be used and reused. This is because data don’t have much meaning without their accompanying metadata.
Metadata comes with data; it gives it context. For example, if the size of a protein fragment is a result data, then the research project name, the date of the experiments, the methodologies used, the protocols, the technician’s name, the lab etc. all form the metadata. Without this information, the protein is a result lacking meaning. Simply put, metadata are bit of information permanently linked to raw data and will guarantee it has context.
You know metadata are important…but why?
