EUDRAGIT® FS 30 D and EUDRAGIT® L 30 D-55 are enteric polymers used to release the drug at certain places in the bowel, according to their dissolution pH. EUDRAGIT® L 30 D-55 starts to release in the duodenum at a pH of 5.5 while EUDRAGIT® FS 30 D releases in the Ileum or in the colon ascendant, starting at a pH of 7.0. Many pharmaceutical actives require a release at a certain pH between these two values in order to find best absorption conditions.
The purpose of this investigation was to develop a tool box to adjust dissolution pH values of aqueous film coatings in the range of 5.5–6.8 for GI targeting of drug release similar to organic coatings. Theophylline granules were used as model drug. Objectives were the mixing ratio of EUDRAGIT® FS 30 D and EUDRAGIT® L 30 D-55 as well as the effects of partial neutralization of the polymers carboxylic groups.
