FiberFlo® Hydrophilic And Hydrophobic Bioreactors And Bioprocessing Filters
October 22, 2004
The FiberFlo® hydrophilic and hydrophobic bioreactors and the bioprocessing filters presented in this application guide have been developed to address the needs of molecular, cell, and tissue development as well as manufacturing. This family of filter products is unique in the industry:
The hydrophilic filters are made using self-wetting Polyphen® polysulfone fiber that does not use glycerin as a wetting agent. Polysulfone is the most biocompatible polymer available for the manufacture of hydrophilic hollow fibers. This has been proven in the medical device industry with several studies using polysulfone as an artificial dialyzer. The Fiberflo® 0.05 um pore size fiber has been tested and is capable of viral Log Reduction Value (LRV) claims.
The hydrophobic models are made of non-wetting (with the exception of liquids with very low surface tension) polypropylene fiber. Polypropylene is also an extremely biocompatible polymer that is used to manufacture hydrophobic hollow fibers. The Fiberflo® hydrophobic fiber has also been tested and is capable of viral LRV claims.
The hydrophilic and hydrophobic products described in this guide have been tested according to ISO guidelines for biocompatibility and have been found to be acceptable.
The FiberFlo® hydrophilic and hydrophobic filters offer a wide range of chemical compatibility and can be ordered with a wide variety of inlet and outlet connections. They are available in three different capsule sizes allowing optimum flexibility for easy system sizing. Each product is labeled with a lot number, catalog number, pore size and serial number. FiberFlo® products are designed and manufactured in accordance with an ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems Standard.
The Polyphen® polysulfone hollow fiber used in the FiberFlo® hydrophilic filter devices is manufactured by Fibercor® using US patent number 5,762,798. All Fibercor® filter devices are manufactured and tested to be non-pyrogenic by Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL). Additional information is available upon request from Fibercor® about these products in the "FiberFlo® Hollow Fiber Capsule Filter Validation Guide" and the "FiberFlo® Hydrophobic Capsule Filter Validation Guide".
