Hot melt extrusion has been widely used for the preparation of sustained release systems for different drugs. Enteric systems prepared by melt extrusion without applying a coating have not been widely investigated so far. One challenge is to meet the specifications of pharmacopoeias for enteric dosage forms. Compressing milled extrudates to tablets does not lead to enteric properties, due to the distribution of the drug on the surface.
The aim of this study was to investigate and provide enteric micropellets without coating by melt extrusion using EUDRAGIT® polymers.
