Surface finish is a critical issue to those involved in pharmaceutical process equipment. Thus, one must understand the various means used to measure surface roughness. Many of the familiar nomenclatures such as "Number 4 Polish" or "180 Grit" have given way to far more precise units of measurements such as Ra or Rz. To help in the understanding of these terms, this paper outlines the means most commonly used to define the quality of surface finish.
