Application Note: Amorphous Solids: Implications for Solubility and Stability
This SSCI Application Note discusses the properties of materials in the amorphous state and evaluation of the pharmaceutical potential of amorphous substances. From a pharmaceutical perspective, whenever amorphous material is present there must be significant concern since, relative to the crystalline state, molecules in the amorphous state generally exhibit greater chemical instability, enhanced dissolution rates, altered mechanical properties, and greater hygroscopicity. When these properties are not anticipated, prevented, or controlled, they can lead to great difficulty on processing, storage, and use of pharmaceutical products.
