White Paper: Advanced Emulsification Technologies

Source: Quadro Engineering Corp.

High shear homogenising and low pressure homogenising open new pathways for fine emulsions with narrow drop size distributions. Their flexibility allow the introduction of exactly desired and validated shear forces.

Typical devices for emulsification in industrial practice are for instance simple agitating, rotor-stator homogenising or high pressure homogenising. Following is an overview on two state-of-the art emulsification technologies, combined with hands-on experience from pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.

Among others, the examples will comprise a novel rotor-stator system which allows the independent control of shear forces and pumping power. This approach enables the pharmaceutical manufacturer to go beyond the "speed limit" typically imposed by cavitation effects in conventional rotor-stator systems plus several additional advantages. The distinction between so called low-shear and high-shear characteristics no longer exists.
