Sustained release drug delivery products offer effective therapies in the treatment of serious chronic diseases, and the development of these products requires customized solutions with tunable material properties to best suit the desired treatment characteristics. Biodegradable materials are often employed to provide sustained delivery of the therapeutic agent to improve patient comfort and compliance as well as therapeutic efficacy. Biomaterials that degrade via a hydrolytic mechanism are typically associated with a building up of acidic degradation products resulting in core acidification of the biomaterial matrix1. This phenomenon is regarded as a major cause for the instability and loss of activity of encapsulated acid-labile pharmaceuticals and particularly therapeutic peptides and proteins2.

DSM Biomedical developed TheraPEA™, a novel, hydrolytically degradable Polyester Amide (PEA) polymer platform that is at the forefront of sustained drug delivery innovation. TheraPEA™ was designed to enable the formulation of treatment solutions that have not been possible with traditional polymer technologies.
