Analytical Spectral Devices and Klöckner Medipak to showcase near-IR pharm packaging system at PackExpo
System to be displayed at Klöckner booth #812 South Hall, November 5-9, 2000
Analytical Spectral Devices Inc. (ASD; Boulder, CO), a supplier of laboratory and portable spectrophotometers and analyzers, and Klöckner Medipak, which manufactures pharmaceutical and medical device packaging machinery, will showcase a state-of-the-art blister packaging system at the upcoming PackExpo in Chicago. Klöckner's QualitySpec TI packaging system features an ASD-developed prototype near-infrared (NIR) analyzer that assures that the correct product is put into the correct package.

"Existing pharmaceutical blister packaging equipment utilize vision systems that visually identify tablets by their size, shape and color, to verify that they are packaged correctly," said John Enterline, director of sales and marketing at ASD. "Up until now there were very few systems that could distinguish if an errant tablet of the same size, shape and color were put into the package. With the integration of the NIR analyzer this is now possible."
Developed specifically for integration into the Klöckner Medipak system, the QualitySpec TI identifies the chemical composition of solid dosage products. The Quality Spec TI also features a scan time of 0.1 sec and can easily accommodate a 60 cycle per minute packaging rate, making it ideal for high-volume production environments.
At the heart of the Quality Spec TI is ASD's field-proven spectrometer. This highly accurate instrument measures reflectance, transmittance, and transflectance, and features a spectral range of 350 nm–2500 nm with a wavelength accuracy of +0.8 nm and wavelength repeatability of +0.02 nm. Photometric range is 5 Au and noise is 60 ° Au.
Founded in 1990, Analytical Spectral Devices is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as a manufacturer of truly field-portable, laboratory-quality UV/Vis/NIR spectrometers, spectroradiometers, and spectrophotometers. ASD's instruments perform in a range of environmental conditions and have applications in analytical chemistry, remote sensing, oceanography, agriculture, and OEM thin-film measurement and process control equipment.
