Aquafine Corporation, the world's largest manufacturer of low-pressure ultraviolet (UV) products, confirms that UV technology effectively destroys chlorine/chloramine in water and eliminates the need for chemical handling. "Our research studies have conclusively shown that chlorine residuals up to 1.0 ppm and chloramine residuals up to 2.0 ppm can be successfully destroyed with UV radiation," says Aquafine President Michael Murphy.

UV water treatment is a time-tested method that is fast, effective, efficient and environmentally friendly. It offers the advantage of simple residual chlorine elimination without the addition of chemicals that can ultimately affect the color, odor, taste and/or flavor of the water, and potentially leave behind harmful by-products. It delivers energy to the water stream in the form of ultraviolet radiation to destroy chlorine/chloramine while simultaneously disinfecting the water stream and reducing the TOC content.

While chlorine/chloramine added to the water stream works well to control the bacterial levels, the residual chlorine alters the water chemistry, taste and flavor - issues of great concern to most industries. In conventional water systems, activated carbon beds or the addition of chemicals such as sodium metabisulfite is used to neutralize the residual chlorine. These solutions have several inherent drawbacks. Sodium metabisulfite addition uses one chemical to remove another and may contribute to scaling of the Reverse Osmosis membrane. Activated carbon beds are often unreliable in their ability to eliminate chlorine and are hospitable to bacteria growth.

Ultraviolet energy is invisible - found in the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and x-rays. The special lamp assemblies found on a UV water treatment system include a special translucent quartz material that allows UV energy to be transmitted through to the water stream as it flows through the UV system's treatment chamber. And while the water stream is exposed to the powerful and concentrated UV radiation, the residual chlorine/chloramine is effectively eliminated.

Aquafine Corporation is the leading manufacturer of low-pressure ultraviolet water treatment equipment for pure and ultrapure applications.
