Biopreservation Freeze Media for Cells and Tissues: CryoStor®
CryoStor® is an intracellular-like solution optimized for low temperature preservation in cells and tissue samples. The solution helps prepare cells for freezing by drawing out intracellular water.
Cells not exposed to CryoStor® are susceptible to a decrease in metabolism, a slowing of ion pumps, and increased rigidity in cell membranes once their temperature drops. If the temperature reaches sub-zero levels, these same untreated cells are more susceptible to dehydration. This is because ice crystals can take form inside the cell membrane as intracellular water is still present.
Because CryoStor cells have less water, they freeze as glassy solids encased in ice. Once they thaw, they undergo a balanced osmotic hydration, which reduces swelling and cell membrane rupture. As a result, their cell machinery recovers faster than what an untreated cell would experience.
