BSL-3 Mobile Biocontainment Laboratory

In November 2020, a BSL-3 laboratory was delivered for the purpose of vaccine development. This laboratory is a self-contained mobile unit that is designed to protect personnel and isolate infectious agents.

The facility incorporates several engineering controls to ensure safety and containment. These include low wall returns, HEPA air filtration, seamless primary walls, and negative pressure work areas. These features help to prevent the spread of infectious agents and maintain a controlled environment within the laboratory.

One of the main challenges faced in the construction of this facility was the need for a freestanding Covid-19 research facility on an accelerated timeline, without the availability of a pre-existing building. To overcome this challenge, the solution was to build a fit-for-purpose BSL-3 mobile facility specifically designed for research on infectious organisms. This allowed for the construction and commissioning of the facility in a record time frame.
