Colorcon Opens New, State-of-the-art No-Tox Products Facility

Colorcon, a division of Berwind Pharmaceutical Services, Inc., recently celebrated the opening of its new, state-of-the-art No-Tox Products facility in Chalfont, PA. The new site will serve as the company's primary source for the development and manufacture of United States, Food and Drug Administration, FDA compliant specialty inks and coatings. In addition to being a high-tech production resource, the new facility is one of the safest facilities of its kind.

According to Michael Gettis, General Manager, "Colorcon recognizes its responsibility to our workers, our neighbors and our environment, which is why we went to such great lengths to meet or exceed all workforce and environmental safety standards."

Incorporated into the design were sophisticated safety measures including:

• Separate production and sanitary sewer lines, and the incorporation of an on-site 10,000-gallon production waste tank capable of holding six to eight weeks of waste-water and alarm systems linked to off-site security prevent waste overflow.

• A special distillation cleaning unit will allow for reuse of 75 percent of waste solvent also reducing hazardous waste disposal by 75 percent.

• A custom designed negative pressure air system contains and exhausts flammable vapors before they can pose a problem to workers or environment

• Continuous monitoring of solvent duct exhaust rates allow for maximum safety and production flexibility

  The new Colorcon facility encompasses 22,000 square feet and features Technical Service, Q. C. and Product Development Labs, a Legal Retain Storage Room and Samples Pilot Lab. Production areas include state-of-the-art mixers, blenders and material handling capabilities for the manufacture of the company's wide range of specialty inks and coatings. Says Gettis, "We now have all our operations together in a new facility, and this will enable us to enhance our service and productivity for our customers, as well as their customers, who will audit the current Good Manufacturing Practice cGMP site for regulatory compliance."
