Group B Gas Detonation Flame Arrestor

Enardo Manufacturing CompanyManufacturing Co. and Dow Chemical jointly announce the installation of an advanced technology Group B Gas Detonation Flame Arrestor at the Dow Chemical Plant in Houston, TX. The companies worked to develop a solution to protect the Dow plant from high-pressure flame propagation in their piping system. The application encompassed several stringent requirements, including the difficulties of large pipe size, high flow capacity, and the extreme volatility and explosive parameters of group B gases. Additionally, a short lead-time for the product was necessary to meet the plant expansion schedule.

Working with Enardo's detonation flame arrestor designer to incorporate advanced materials from the aerospace industry, a prototype was designed, constructed, and tested to validate the explosion and flow capacities at the Chem-Mech Engineering testing facility. The detonation arrestors for the Dow Chemical installation contained 36-in.-dia. technology elements with 16-in. piping connections and included pressure drop flame detection and a steam nozzle port.
