Heat Transfer Fluid

The 3M Specialty Materials Division has introduced 3M Novec Engineered Fluid HFE-8401HT into the Novec brand family of products. Novec HFE-8401HT fluid is a non-flammable, hydrofluoroether (HFE) that is used in process cooling applications.

Novec HFE-8401HT fluid transfers heat effectively, while maintaining very low viscosities when temperatures need to reach -100ºC (-148ºF). The fluid is non-flammable, non-corrosive and nearly odor free.

When Novec HFE-8401HT fluid is used in conjunction with a new technology developed by 3M to regulate system pressure, many additional applications may use the fluid even at steam sterilization temperatures without increasing system pressure. This makes the fluid useful for pharmaceutical freeze dryers and pharmaceutical/chemical reactor cooling.

Due to its dielectric properties and inertness, Novec HFE-8401HT fluid can also be used in direct contact cooling of computers, transformers and fuel cells. In addition, Novec HFE-8401HT fluid can be used as a replacement for some functions carried out by perfluorinated liquids (PFCS) including semiconductor manufacturing and test equipment. It is also an alternative for silicone oils, kerosene, tri-chloroethylene, methylene chloride and d-limonene in many applications.

Like all products in the Novec family, HFE-8401HT fluid is a smart choice for industry as it is practically non-toxic, non-flammable and has many favorable environmental properties such as a low global warming potential and zero ozone depletion. Its unique non-flammable property helps eliminate the risk of fires, which can cause millions of dollars in plant damage, lost products and down time. Novec HFE-8401HT fluid is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency Significant New Alternatives Policy for use without restriction in ozone depleting substances replacement applications.
