How Biocatalysts Address Process Development Issues
Antje Gupta is General Manager of Cambrex IEP GmbH in Wiesbaden, Germany. She studied biochemistry at Martin-Luther-University Halle and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Dresden.
At Wiesbaden she is responsible for scientific strategy, business development, and R&D, leading initiatives that keep Cambrex at the forefront of enzyme development and biocatalytic process innovation. She oversees research and patent strategy, drawing on the company's proprietary enzyme libraries to support both internal and customer development programs, and leads all site R&D projects from concept through to commercialization. Her expertise covers enzyme development, the integration of biocatalysis into manufacturing processes for chemicals and APIs, and enzymology, enzyme kinetics, and reaction mechanisms.
Asked how biocatalysis addresses process development challenges, Gupta points to scalability and cost-effectiveness relative to chemical routes. Her team examines the economics of different enzyme classes against target conversions and expected production volumes, where the technology can often scale a process more efficiently.
