INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 Modified Starch

Source: Grain Processing Corporation
INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 is a cold water soluble modified starch that has low viscosity in solution and dries to a clear, flexible film.
INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 is the trademark for a new, modified starch uniquely designed for film-forming applications and aqueous film coating. INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 is a cold water soluble modified starch that has low viscosity in solution and dries to a clear, flexible film. Finished films and coatings are water soluble, clear, and have excellent sheen.

Properties

INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 hydrates readily in cold, warm, or hot water. To hydrate the starch, disperse the starch with good agitation in water and mix for approximately 20 minutes or until fully hydrated. A propeller-type mixer works very well for mixing the starch solution. For best results, create a vortex and add the starch to the top edge of the vortex, allowing the starch to hydrate without lumping. Any lumps created will quickly disappear with continued agitation.

Preblending

To enhance dispersibility, INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 can be preblended with other dry ingredients then added to the vortex of the aqueous solution. Preblending with oils or syrups will also enhance dispersibility of INSTANT PURE-COTE. A typical ratio of starch to other ingredients would be a 50/50 blend.

Films

The film-forming capabilities of INSTANT PURE-COTE can be demonstrated by casting a free film.

Strong, flexible films have been successfully created in the lab using a 15 to 20% solution of INSTANT PURE-COTE in water. A 15% solution of INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 has a viscosity of 110 to 130 centipoise. To ensure film clarity, the starch must be fully hydrated. Films can be made by casting B793 solution onto plastic or glass using a drawdown gauge. Typical film thickness is 0.5 to 1.0 mm. Films can be dried at room temperature overnight or by using a cool air oven. Use caution not to overdry the films. Once removed from the plastic or glass, films should be clear and fairly elastic.

Plasticizers, emulsifiers, and other ingredients may be added to films to create or enhance properties.

Applications

INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 can be used in a wide variety of applications where filmforming properties are desired for coatings, barriers, texture modification, binding or adhesives. It can be used to replace or extend other polymers such as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, gums, gelatin, etc. INSTANT PURE-COTE B793 disperses and hydrates more quickly and creates less foam than other typically used polymers.
