ISPE Names 2005 Membership Award Winners At Society's Annual Meeting

Tampa, FL - ISPE, a global not-for-profit Society of pharmaceutical manufacturing professionals, is pleased to announce its 2005 Award Winners. Awards were presented by Robert P. Best, ISPE's President and CEO, at the Society's Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona in November. The following individuals, companies, Affiliates, Chapters, and committees were recognized for their contributions to the pharmaceutical industry and the Society:

Max Seales Yonker was honored with the Richard B. Purdy Distinguished Achievement Award - a distinction presented only to Members who have made significant, long-term contributions to the Society. Ms. Yonker, who died in May after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer, had been Director of QA/QC at Geron Corporation. She had more than 18 years of technical and operational experience within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in both Europe and the US. Within ISPE, Ms. Yonker was a leader with the Clinical Materials and Education Committees, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter, and the International Board of Directors. Her husband, Tom Yonker, accepted the award on her behalf.

Arthur D. Perez, PhD, received the Max Seales Yonker Member of the Year Award. This award, renamed this year to honor Ms. Yonker, is presented to the ISPE Member who has made the most significant contribution to the Society during the past year. A newly elected member of the ISPE Board of Directors, Dr. Perez has been a key figure in the Good Automated Manufacturing Practice (GAMP®) program. He has been instrumental in launching the GAMP Americas Forum and then leading it for the past four years, and he serves on the GAMP Editorial Review Board and has helped to maintain both the quality and the output of all GAMP documents, including the most recent Laboratory Systems Good Practice Guide.

Gerry Migliaccio received the ISPE Professional Achievement Award in honor of his significant contributions to the industry. This prestigious award has only been presented five times previously. Mr. Migliaccio is Vice President of Global Quality and EHS Operations for Pfizer Global Manufacturing, and contributes much time and energy to numerous committees and initiatives to benefit the pharmaceutical industry. He is the immediate past Chairman of ISPE's International Leadership Forum, and has been a long standing member of the PhRMA Quality Technical Group. He also serves as Vice Chairman of the ASTM E55 PAT System Management committee, is an Industry Representative to FDA's Advisory Committee on Pharmaceutical Sciences, and is the Rapporteur for ICH Q10 on Quality Systems.

The ISPE Facility of the Year Committee was presented with the Committee of the Year Award in honor of its outstanding work in launching the inaugural Facility of the Year Award. The program, held in conjunction with INTERPHEX and Pharmaceutical Processing magazine, recognizes those who design and construct leading-edge pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities worldwide.

Genentech, Inc. was honored with the Company of the Year Award in recognition of its strong support of the Society through membership, program attendance, conference leaders, speakers, committees, and other participation.

The ISPE San Francisco/Bay Area Chapter received the Chapter of the Year Award, presented to the Chapter that most strongly supports the Society in membership growth, number and quality of local events, participation in committees, and innovation. The San Francisco/Bay Area Chapter retained 95 percent of its membership in 2005, thanks to the widest and most varied range of programs within the Society.

The ISPE Nordic Affiliate received the Affiliate of the Year Award, presented to the Affiliate that has had the most successful year as reflected by membership growth, number and quality of local activities, participation in international committees, and innovation. Surpassing 1,000 Members in only its fifth year of existence, the Nordic Affiliate has become a leader for the Society in cooperation with academia, developing a curriculum on Process Analytical Technology (PAT) with several regional universities.

Greg Thorp, PE and John Zwak were honored with the Roger J. Sherwood Article of the Year Award for their article entitled "Measuring Process Temperature in Small Diameter Lines." The article appeared in the September/October 2004 issue of Pharmaceutical Engineering, ISPE's bi-monthly magazine.

Bhawna Gupta, a student at Northeastern University, received the Graduate Student Poster of the Year Award for her poster entitled "Targeting of Brain Tumor Cells with Nucleosome-specific Monoclonal Antibody 2C5-modified Liposomes In Vitro and In Vivo." Ms. Gupta was sponsored by the ISPE Boston Area Chapter.

Christian Vives, a student at Widener University, was presented with the Undergraduate Student Poster of the Year Award for his poster entitled "Design of a Fuzzy Logic Control System." Vives was sponsored by the ISPE Delaware Valley Chapter.
