Lilly Introduces Insulin 'Pens'

Eli Lilly and Co. has launched a new insulin delivery device for people with diabetes who have busy and unpredictable schedules or who have trouble using a vial and syringe. Humulin 70/30 (70% human insulin isophane suspension, 30% human insulin injection (rDNA origin)), Humulin N (NPH human insulin (rDNA origin) isophane suspension), and Humalog (insulin lispro injection (rDNA origin)) can now be dispensed from a pen that fits into a pocket or purse and requires no refrigeration after its first use.

The Humulin 70/30, Humulin N, and Humalog pens are the first pre-filled disposable insulin delivery devices to hold 3.0 milliliters (300 units) of insulin. The patient simply turns a dose knob, which can be dialed forward or backward in single unit increments. The dose knob emits an audible "click" with each unit dialed, until the exact number of units appears in the magnifying dose window.
