Midbrook Developing Decontamination Standards For Medical Industry

Keeping a medical facility free of contamination is important both for the safety of patients as well as staff. Medical decontamination assurance must be an ongoing effort of continuous refinement in order to limit staff and patient exposure to HAI (Hospital Acquired Infections). Midbrook uses its 35 years of experience with industrial decontamination and cleaning to inject fresh ideas and philosophy toward that end.

"Our number one goal is to develop a process that can repeatedly, and reliably, achieve the same decontamination results for the lifetime of the process," said Business Development Director Jamie Crowley.

Midbrook became a world leader in high volume, production cleaning for the automotive industry by developing washers with custom processes for specific applications and challenges. Their washers are custom designed to achieve consistent results and provide the best quality cleaning possible for a specific part.

"The actual methods of cleaning and decontamination vary from part to part in the automotive field," said Crowley, "but the underlying goal is the same – a clean product or surface and a process that the user can depend on to deliver that level of cleanliness. We would like to transfer that expectation for decontamination results to the medical industry"

This is where Midbrook hopes to divert from the currently accepted medical industry practice of validating a process be maintained rather than a result be achieved.

"Just because a device or instrument has been exposed to a certain level of water heat, does not mean that device has achieved the level of decontamination required," argues Crowley.

"First the device must be cleaned sufficiently. If that is not achieved, then decontamination cannot occur. The old adage is you can clean, but not decontaminate, but you cannot decontaminate without cleaning."

Midbrook uses ATP (adenosine triosophate) testing to determine the level of contamination on common medical instruments. ATP testing is a quick process that provides the user with an accurate measurement of contamination on the surface of the object being tested. Using these results as a guideline, Midbrook works to create a process or install a new surface that can lower the contamination.

For surface areas of a facility, Midbrook can install Corian® to prevent microbial growth. Corian® is a non-porous solid surface that resists microbial growth and is growing in popularity. Midbrook provides custom or standardized Corian® scrub sinks, work surfaces, and can even include Corian® in their custom medical case carts.

Midbrook manufactures cart washers, tunnel washers, and instrument washers with multiple program variations. These can be selected from a list or each can be individually modified to assure the cleaning process is appropriate for the level of soil or bio-burden load. Once that level is attacked properly, then decontamination is more probable and a successful ATP test result is increased.
