BetzDearborncompany's Res-Q service provides expert resin cleaning safely, quickly, and effectively. One of the most important components in keeping the system operating reliably is the external treatment that purifies the makeup water, making it usable as boiler feedwater or process water. The heart of your water purification system is the ion exchange resin that softens or demineralizes the feedwater. The resin must be kept clean so the dissolved ions can freely travel in and out of the beads. Any substance that blocks the ion exchange sites will cause your water quality to deteriorate, increasing the cost of operation.

Ion exchange resins are always subject to inorganic and organic foulants, ranging from naturally occurring lignins and iron compounds in the raw water to process contamination. Some foulants can be partially removed during the regeneration process; however, if the accumulation of foulants in the resin becomes severe enough, it will result in decreased system efficiency and increased operating costs, and eventually, irreversible damage to the resin beads. To restore capacity to a fouled resin, the resin must be properly cleaned before the contaminants do permanent damage and labor intensive process should be cleaned by professionals. Since resins are only infrequently cleaned at any one installation, the expertise available through the Res-Q program is there at the site only when needed. The resources required for proper and safe resin cleaning, such as a source of hot, soft water or adequately sized cleaning vessels, are readily available with the Res-Q program.

On the day of the cleaning, a mobile cleaning facility will come to the plant. The resin is removed from the vessel and thoroughly backwashed, if needed, to remove particulates and fines that may not be removed during normal operation. A team of BetzDearborn specialists cleans the resin using procedures determined by analysis of the resin condition. All aspects of the cleaning process are carefully controlled and monitored in the on-board laboratory. The ion exchange vessel is thoroughly inspected and the lining is spark tested. The condition, positioning and alignment of the vessel lining is tested for evidence of cracks or corrosion. The cleaned resin is returned to the vessel. A complete report, including a procedure summary, the type and amount of foulant removed, and the results of the vessel inspection is submitted. During the cleaning, the only work required of personnel is to isolate the vessel to be cleaned, provide access to the resin bed and vessel interior, and regenerate and return the unit to service after the cleaning has been completed. Procedures are usually performed in one day or less.
