Overcoming Melt Processing Challenges For Polymer-Based Drug Delivery Systems

Drug delivery solutions come in a number of different forms, ultimately depending upon many variables, including the required release profile, the intended delivery site and the nature of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) being delivered. While technological innovations are enabling great advances in this sector to help boost therapeutic compliance, processing therapies to ensure efficacy across delivery methods remains challenging.
Implantables are one solution for long-acting drug delivery, with fibers and rods typically produced via melt processing. However, the melt processing step presents difficulty for producing reliable therapies and requires an innovative solution. In order for the polymer-API to reach its melted state, temperatures often exceed 160°C, exposure to which can cause a loss of potency in the API.
Discover how a biodegradable polymer platform which can be easily applied with hot melt processing for drug loaded therapies enables processing at a relatively low temperature, preserving the potency of temperature sensitive APIs.
