X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry is an established analytical technique for slag analysis in the iron, steel and cement industries. The method is characterized by its ease of use, straightforward sample preparation and non-destructive multi-element analysis. Now, PANalytical's Axios-Minerals wavelength dispersive XRF (WDXRF) spectrometer overcomes the need for reference materials to calibrate the system. Including a set of multi-element wide-range oxide (WROXI) standards and the SuperQ Fundamental Parameters (FP) calibration model, Axios-Minerals provides accurate and precise measurement of the elemental composition of blast furnace slag.

Slag has many applications in the construction industry. Accurate, reliable and repeatable analysis of the elemental composition of slag is essential for process control and to assess its suitability for specific applications.

Axios-Minerals is a fully integrated WDXRF spectrometer configured specifically to meet the needs of industry. It comes complete with WROXI standards that enable calibration of the spectrometer to determine concentrations of up to 21 common oxides. The WROXI standard set covers the principal constituents of all types of blast furnace slag, namely, oxides of silica, alumina, calcium and magnesium.

The accuracy of the Axios-Minerals spectrometer using WROXI standards and the SuperQ FP calibration model for major and minor element analyses in blast furnace slags is excellent. Furthermore, the precision, repeatability and reproducibility of the Axios-Minerals system are outstanding, not only in the short-term, but also for measurements carried out over an extended period.
