Saint-Gobain Desjonqueres Pharmaceutical Divisionication process coats a glass vial with a thin, protective film of plastic (PVC). For aerosol applications this plastic coating serves as a protection against shocks while at the same time shielding the contents from light.

In case of breakage, the plastic acts to contain the broken glass fragments. For added safety, a tiny vent hole allows the aerosol propellant to escape, thus preventing a potential hazard. In terms of decoration, multiple coating options are available, including opaque, gloss finish, matt finish, pearlized, metallic, or frosted.

Serigraphy (silk screen printing) can also be done using one of two techniques: ink based printing over the plastic coating or enamel deposited directly onto the glass surface.

Baby bottles, tablets bottles, syrup bottles, and aerosols can all be decorated thus preserving the intrinsic qualities of glass as the primary package and, at the same time, adapt to the ever-changing requirements of the pharmaceutical market.
