Premixed Antibiotic Solutions Easier to Use, May Alleviate Product Shortages

Baxter Healthcare Corp. (Deerfield, IL) announced the availability of Timentin (ticarcillin/disodium and clavulanate potassium injection), cefazolin injection, gentamicin sulfate injection, and penicillin G potassium injection in the company's premixed medication system. These premixed solutions offer a safe alternative to the reconstitution of powdered medications into containers by clinicians.

Premixed medications are ready-to-use, saving clinicians time and labor by eliminating reconstitution in the pharmacy or at the point of care. Baxter's manufacturing process allows it to formulate bulk drug powder into homogenous solutions, which are then processed into patented container systems. The company's anti-infective premixes include more than 20 different antibiotics.

In addition, premixed medications reduce the risk of medication errors, and ensure sterility and potency with a closed system. According to John Wesley, vice president of medical affairs for Baxter's I.V. Systems business, premixed solutions are considered to be among the safest drug delivery systems, because quality assurance is built into the preparation process. "Additionally, the labeling of the product with the name, dose of drug, and diluent provides an additional safeguard," he added.

Baxter Healthcare Corp. is the principal U.S. operating subsidiary of Baxter International Inc. Baxter International Inc. is a global medical products and services company that focuses on critical therapies for people with life-threatening conditions.
