The generics market has taken off in recent years due to numerous patent expirations for brand-name companies. In light of this, pharmaceutical manufacturers, insurance companies and consumers, in search of significant cost savings, have turned towards the generics industry.

Another contributing factor to this market growth is that generics, which make up nearly 80% of all distributed prescriptions, are only generating 25% revenue. Companies and distributors are striving to regain some margin and retain customer loyalty by establishing brand-names for a given generic or providing branding services for their buyers. The generics manufacturing market has significantly expanded over the last five years, and will accelerate until 2019 due to upcoming 2015 patent expirations. Ongoing changes in regulations and demand have spurred heavy investment by companies in the development of brand-names for generics that can help them differentiate themselves in the market.
