ProSim introduces 'BibPhy Add-In' for rigorous thermodynamic calculations in Microsoft Excel

This Microsoft Excel Add-In is a new product that aims to calculate within a spreadsheet all kind of physical or thermodynamic properties, ranging from pure component transport property to fluid phase equilibria for complex multi-components systems.

"Many engineers have developed, within MS-Excel spreadsheets, their own calculation routines to solve a large variety of chemical engineering problems: heat exchanger rating, compressor or pump design, etc…In some companies, these in-house developments are widely and routinely used. Nevertheless they are generally limited to one or very few fluids and they are not able to rigorously take into account for instance variations of fluid properties with respect to temperature. With BibPhy Add-In all these developments will get access to rigorous thermodynamic calculations and drastically increase their results quality but also their application's fields. Accurate fluid properties are now embedded as a dynamic part of the analysis" says Vincent MAURIES, BibPhy Add-In product manager.

"Some similar solutions already exist, even as freeware, but they are very limited or poorly validated and maintained. With BibPhy Add-In, based on COM technology, it is the first time that a full and professional thermodynamic package is available as an Add-In to Excel at a very low cost".

When BibPhy Add-In is loaded, the full ProSim's thermodynamic package is called. It includes:

  • a comprehensive physical properties database for more than 1 700 pure components, and the possibility to create and modify his own databases. The databases management is done with Component Plus, delivered with BibPhy Add-In. Moreover, the intrinsic properties of pure components stored in the various databases can be reached from any cell of a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. A binary interaction parameters database, and access to prediction properties methods are also available.
  • a complete thermodynamic library including all the latest K-values and enthalpy models, equations of state (SRK, PR, BWRS,…), activity coefficients methods (NRTL, UNIFAC, MHV2,…) and specific models (for electrolytes, pure water, strong acids, sour-water…) in order to solve real industrial problems.
All the calculation possibilities represent more than 200 functions such as density, specific heat, thermal conductivity, enthalpy, viscosity, vapor pressure, fugacity coefficient, compressibility factor, bubble and dew points, LV, LL or LLV flashes,… All the functions available in ProSim's thermodynamic package, which is widely used in process industry, are available in BibPhy Add-In.

In practice, from any Microsoft Excel calculation sheet, the user will:

  • select the pure components of its fluid (several search strategies are proposed, by name, by formula, by boiling point,…);
  • choose a thermodynamic model (and associated binary interaction parameters when applicable) to represent the behavior of the system (by default, a wide application field thermodynamic model is used);
  • set unit preferences;
  • and place in any cell of his spreadsheet a function whose arguments can either be fixed values, or references to other cells. BibPhy Add-In functions may be selected with Paste Function or directly entered as with any Excel function. All functions have an associated Function Wizard, which allows easy entry of the required arguments. Furthermore on-line HELP and user's guide are provided.
BibPhy Add-In has been designed for 32 bits systems and Microsoft Excel 97 (Version 8 or higher) are supported.

About ProSim
ProSim is an independent privately held French company successfully active in Computer Aided Process Engineering (CAPE) since 1989. ProSim's major objective is to provide innovative software and service solutions for units modeling, simulation and optimization in the process industries. From optimal design to operation improvement, ProSim serves its worldwide demanding clients with state-of-the-art proven technologies. ProSim's offer addresses mainly chemical market but also serves specialty chemicals, petrochemicals, refining, gas processing, food or pharmaceuticals industries.

ProSim's services include technical consultation in process simulation and project services (modeling services, dedicated models or custom software development, etc…).

Thanks to a long term partnership with prestigious university research centers and continuous investment in R&D, ProSim has gained a leading position in the field of rigorous batch unit operations simulation and has been able to develop original process simulation solutions, to become an active player in CAPE and to successfully address process design and engineering or operation optimization.

The company operates from offices in Toulouse with highly qualified and experienced technical staff enabling a deep understanding of clients' needs and requirements in order to instantly take into account, analyze and solve even the more complex process industries problems. ProSim's skills include modeling, thermodynamics, numerical methods or man/machine interface (MMI). ProSim also relies on a network of partners to increase its access to the market or to perform joint developments when appropriate.
