Scalability Of Cost Effective 2D Rocking Motion Bioreactors With Internal Filter Membrane For Perfusion Processes
By Jens-Christoph Matuszczyk, Markus Schulze, Sabrina Janoschek, Gerben Zijlstra, and Gerhard Greller, Sartorius

Standard bio-manufacturing processes commonly rely on seed ratios around 1:5, a method that has proven to be sufficient and reliable for years. However, modern technology platforms, such as cost-effective 2D rocking motion (RM) bioreactors in perfusion mode, can be easily implemented for process intensification. These advancements significantly increase viable cell densities to 100 million cells per milliliter (100E6 cells/mL) and beyond. High cell density (HCD) processes provide powerful tools to drive the seed ratio to 1:130 and beyond.
Apart from reducing the duration of the seed train, high cell densities in the seed train also allow for the inoculation of production processes at elevated cell numbers, thereby shortening the overall N-stage process. Find out how the potential of this approach is acknowledged and promoted by the biopharma industry and corresponding consortia.
