Shear Tester

The Jenike Shear Tester measures the direct shear strength of powders and other bulk solid materials.
Jenike & Johanson, Inc.Shear Tester measures the direct shear strength of powders and other bulk solid materials.
To determine mass flow hopper angles, the shear cell base is replaced with a wall surface coupon. The shear cell ring, filled with material, is then pushed across the wall material sample. Friction between the wall coupon and bulk solid is measured and used to determine critical wall angles for mass flow.
Capabilities:
- Generates data for minimum bin outlet dimensions
- Generates data for mass flow hopper angles
- Simulates both continuous flow and storage-at-rest conditions
- Available with optional heater
General Testing Procedure
To measure the shear strength of a given sample:
- A shear cell (base and ring) is filled with material
- A vertical load is applied to the covered cell, using weights and the weight carrier
- The shear cell ring is pushed horizontally across the base, with the required force measured and recorded on the strip chart
- The test is repeated using a range of consolidating weights based on the material's density and the anticipated size of a storage bin
- Shear values are translated into dimensional data for appropriate bin outlet sizing
