Simplify Pharmaceutical Tableting Of Herbal Extracts

Source: Grace

The market for natural products has seen tremendous growth in the last few years. Most of the active ingredients of supplements, personal care, and other types of products marketed as “natural” are extracts of crude plants (leaves, barks, roots, etc.), which can be wet or dry.

Solving the Degradation Challenge

These products are often prone to degradation, especially during processing and storage, leading to loss of the active component, production of metabolites with loss of activity, and in extreme cases, production of toxic metabolites. The degradation process is accelerated for every 10°C rise in temperature if a heating step is required to dry the extracts. Mesoporous silica gels like SYLOID® XDP silica with high pore volume and high density can convert sticky and wet extracts into free flowing powders which can then be easily formulated into tablets or capsules.
