Taste masking, combined with swallowability and palatability, are integral considerations for oral drug formulations; ensuring both as part of a drug product's final formulation can serve to increase patient acceptability and adherence to the therapy, which in turn can bolster regulatory acceptance and commercial potential.

The negative impacts of poor patient adherence represent an increasingly important consideration for drug manufacturers and regulators alike. There are several taste masking strategies drug developers can implement to improve a drug's palatability and increase its potential for greater patient adherence. Adare Pharma Solutions and International Flavors & Fragrances, Inc. (IFF) recently hosted the Taste Masking 101 webinar series on the topic of increasing adherence via taste masking. Dr. Luigi Boltri, senior director of pharmaceutical sciences at Adare, and Dr. Nasrin Mahmoudi, technical manager at IFF, discussed various taste masking strategies and the factors that influence different approaches.
